I’d like to see the publishing industry stop leaning so hard on so-called Canadian authors who neither live or work here. I’m thinking of like Rachel Cusk, Sarah Bernstein, and others who crowd out domestic authors for “buy Canadian shelf space but are writing for a foreign publisher and audience.
Looking forward to reading the book .Stocking it in our shops Book Warehouse and Black Bond Books .Many of the solutions were documented in More Canada report of years ago .So many great ideas ignored by Heritage Canada . Now we have lost years and big publishers have even more power here .
I brought home 'Lament for a Literature' today from my public library. Since joining ShuSh I have put every book you publish on a a request to purchase for my local library. As a former librarian, they trust my taste, and on it goes. I was about the put 'Lament for a Literature' on when I found it was already purchased! So I think Sutherland House is now become a go-to first choice on good Non Fiction, much like Dundurn Press and others were oh so long ago.
So, is anybody in government listening? Anybody? Anybody at all??? If this isn't a rocket up the rear end of Heritage (and whoever is this week's head of that department) I don't know how you get their attention... What else could do the trick? Maybe somebody twisting Carney's arm at some Ottawa cocktail gathering, or at a state dinner?
Kenneth, how do we make this happen. I live on the west coast but would be happy to assist in any way. If there is a policy document that I could forward onto our two MPs, Jonathan Wilkinson and Patrick Weiler, let me know. Or if you could condense this into one document that I could use, that would be helpful too. I started my career in book publishing, and have supported Canadian writers where I can. Although retired, I can still muster support for this very important initiative with all of my friends.
This is a really great set of ideas. While I don't like more government regulation, the status quo is clearly not working and a vast number of Canadian writers producing great work are unable to get publisher support to promote their creations.
A fascinating and shocking account of the decline of Canadian publishing, along with some persuasive proposals for its revival and support. One hopes that the politicians are listening!
I don't know that Canadian broadcast television is a good example. The easiest job in the world is the programmer at CTV who simply goes to LA, buys a bunch of American programming and returns to Toronto. What percentage of television viewing by English Canadians is Canadian made (not American programming filmed in Canada) and tells Canadian stories? It's the same issue. English Canadians don't care. Maggie is right.
A shocking number that shows just how ineffectual we are in caring about Canada . The proposals make good sense . Will help carry the message

Keep up this needed Cdn publishing.
